Sailaway St. Anthony is a long-established boat yard, boat hire, anchorage and ferry facility on the Helford River, on Gillan Creek.
Self-drive boat hire
We operate Cornwall’s largest fleet of hire boats, catering to beginners and experienced boaters alike. Our motor- and sailboats are available for short term hire and we deliver hire boats to Helford and all points along the Helford River. For anyone wishing to explore the beautiful beaches and creeks that surround us, we provide a brief tutorial, fuel and all the requisite safety equipment to ensure you have a safe and memorable boat trip on the Helford. Kayaks and paddleboards provide an easy way to get afloat, while sailors can enjoy Topaz, Topper, Pico and Wayfarer dinghies or Drascombe Longboats which come equipped with an outboard. Our Plymouth Pilots are inboard diesel launches with a small cuddy for shelter and provide space for up to eight adults, while smaller Bass Boats are ideal for exploring the coves and beaches of the Helford.
Boat Services, moorings and storage
We have visitors’ moorings on Gillan Creek and at Helford Point, good launching facilities as well as large dinghy and trailer parks at St. Anthony, and an on-site car park. Sailaway has full-time skilled craftsmen to solve any problems with boats, rigging or trailers. We also provide long-term seasonal moorings, winter lay-up and overhauls. Our boat storage facilities include winter berths at Carne and boats are regularly checked over the winter. For owners based away from their boats, we are able to offer regular or ad hoc gardiennage to ensure peace of mind.
The Helford River offers endless opportunities on the water. The river is one of the finest and most picturesque inshore boating waters in Britain. Several creeks – Gillan, Frenchman’s, Polwheveral and Port Navas – branch off the main river and sheltered coves and beaches can be found on both banks. Grove, Porth Saxon, Ponsence, Bosahan and Grebe Beaches are the most notable; several of these are unreachable by car and stay quiet when other beaches are crowded. Closer to St Anthony, Flushing, Gillan and Lestowder beaches are within easy reach by rowing boat or kayak. The Shipwright’s Arms, The Ferryboat and Port Navas Yacht Club are all excellent options to stop off at for refreshments.
